The BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) is hosting its first ever Aviation Week.

The week of activities commenced on Sunday with an Ecumenical Service and continues during the course of the week with an open house at the Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport, the much anticipated Air Shows this weekend and will conclude on April 20 with a recognition dinner for employees.

The mission of the BVIAA is “to develop and maintain world class airports which provide safe and secure gateways to the world and entrances to the Virgin islands.”

With the theme for the week being “Aviation Week: Past, Present and Future” the Authority has been called upon to reflect on the services offered.

The Governor in his remarks at the service on Sunday highlighted the importance quality service since there are many criticisms of the way in which persons are treated at the airport.

Indeed this is a concern that has been leveled against the authority over time and in order for the authority to move forward, it must first address the quality of service it provides. As the Governor rightly pointed out, the airport is one of the front doors to the Virgin Islands and therefore gives the visiting public the first impression of what they can expect.

Such an impression should be positive even though they have their jobs to do. The initiative of opening up its doors to the public is a welcoming one since that Authority is not well known for being a public-oriented body.

With the public understanding the operations and mandate of the authority, they will also understand why certain measures are taken by the authority for security and other reasons.

As much as we would like to see the Authority become more welcoming in its treatment of visitors, we must also understand the importance of screening and measures taken for security purposes. However, the Authority can still carry out its job by ensuring that the traveling public is as comfortable as possible.

As the week of celebrations continues, we hope that persons will also understand the importance of the aviation industry to the development of the Territory and hopefully attract needed workers for the industry.
