The Vincy team and the Cavaliers team have both rolled into the final of the BVI Cricket Association’s NAGICO-sponsored 20/20 domestic cricket league with their unbeaten record on the line. Both teams are well known to each other, having played in a tape ball competition final, which Cavaliers won convincingly.

Statistically, both teams boast deep batting line ups with potent bowling attacks that will be on display this Sunday when they clash at the Greenland Ground.

Cavaliers reached the finals by virtue of a 72-run victory over arch-rivals Vikings in a near-lopsided affair while the Vincy team secured a hard-fought 6-wicket victory against Police. Both matches were played last Sunday and each captain had an opportunity to scout the other team.

“Definitely, one will have to loose. We respect Vincy as a great team and we give them credit for that, but I think we are up to the challenge,” said Daniel Singh, the Cavaliers’ wicket-keeper/captain.

The Vincy team will be looking to avenge their tape-ball tournament final loss.

“I know it will be a good final. Spectators from both teams were anxiously awaiting this game. Cavaliers beat Vincy in a tape-ball final and the Vincy players are seeking revenge and right now their eyes are full with blood,” said Vincy’s captain, Bront DeFreitas.

He outlined that the Cavaliers strength is their batting which is built around former West Indies player, Keith Semple and Dorian Auguiste.

Cavaliers’ left-hand top-order batsman Dorian Auguiste is one the key batsman in the Cavaliers batting attack. Last Sunday he smashed 10 fours and 2 sixes before he was eventually caught out on 76.“Their bowling is not really strong, but once we topple Dorian and Semple, we are in with a chance. We will continue to play aggressive cricket and attack any total if they bat first.

Singh has often ignored talk before games, and said recently, “The game is played on the field and not off the field.”

In the semi-finals last Sunday, Cavaliers won the toss and elected to bat. They posted 224 for 7 off their allotted 20 overs in an inning that was built around the powerful hitting of top-order batsman, Dorian Auguiste, who smashed 10 fours and 2 sixes before he was eventually caught out on 76 trying to heave a good length delivery for six.

Augustie had support from Teddy Nandkishore 40 (3 fours, 4 sixes), Vishal Bharat 26 (3 fours, 1 six), Keith Semple 25 (2 fours) and Kwesi Sinclair 24 (3 sixes).

Bowling for the Vikings, Yadeem Walker took 4 for 30 and Bashirudin Hydar 2 for 40.

Staring down a sizeable target of 225, Vikings struggled at the start and were at one stage 87 for 5 in the 13th over before team captain, Selwyn Fordyce belted 8 fours and 2 sixes in a blistering inning of 58 runs.

Vincy’s captain Bront DeFreitas will be looking to stamp his bowling and batting experience in the final against CavaliersFordyce’s entertaining inning finally ended when he was caught at deep mid-wicket by Keith Semple off the bowling of Vijay Jappan. Anil Mahabir 26 (5 fours), was the only other contributor with the bat for Vikings. Jhappan ended with 3 for 17, and Vishal Bharat, 2 for 34 to lead the bowling for the Cavaliers.

In the second semi-final, Vincy beat the Police by 6 wickets in what turned out to be a much closer game than anticipated. Winning the toss and batting first, Police raced to 61-1 in the 6th over and eventually ended on 188 for 7, with Kevin Joseph getting 56 (4 fours, 4 sixes) and Neil Niles 41 (6 fours, 2 sixes).  Bowling for Vincy, Ivan Clarke took 2 for 40, Cedric Cupid 2 for 38, and Kendrick Leslie 2 for 47.

In reply, Vincy fell behind the required the run-rate in the earlier overs and at one stage Police may have been thinking of a surprise victory. But a late rally saw them home comfortably with one over to spare. Leading the batting were D. Brown 64 (9 fours, 2 sixes) and Austin McDowell 34 (6 fours, 1 six). In the bowling for Police, Elvis Mangal took 3 for 15.
