Some 14 individuals were convicted on close to 40 drug-related charges as a result of an undercover drug operation executed by the Anti-Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, a division within the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.

The operation was carried out in 2006 and reached a conclusion early June with the sentencing of two defendants to prison terms. All 14 defendants are to pay fines totaling over $86,000.

Prosecutor Inspector Jefferson Knight says Operation Barracuda was successful because officers were thorough in their investigation and were able to secure the necessary evidence to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We are pleased with the kind of diligent surveillance work that went into making these arrests and all the detectives who played a role in this operation must be highly commended.

Operation Barracuda, executed in May and July 2006, was led by the detectives of the Anti-Drug and Violent Crime Task Force who were assisted by agents of U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency

The 14 arrested subsequently pleaded guilty to various drug charges including possession and possession with intent to supply. The drugs involved were cocaine and cannabis.

Of those convicted, Derrick Gumbs and Laren Turnbull were sent to prison for 12 months and six months respectively.

Operation Barracuda is one of many operations executed by the Anti-Drug and Violent Crime Task Force of Royal Virgin Islands Police Force to reduce drug-related criminal activity within the Virgin Islands.
