Winston Findley serving for the match where he defeated Mark Chapman 9/7, 9/4, 9/7.Coming off a successful Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Championships, Winston Findley is getting set to take on the best regional players in the over 50 class in August.

Findley will be joined by fellow islander, Musonda Poole, as members of the OECS team which will participate in the Southern Caribbean Squash Championships in Guyana between August 15 and 22.

Findley, who took a break from major competitions, returned last month in the 2008 National Lotteries Authority OECS Squash Championships in St. Vincent and the Grenadines by upsetting the #2 and # 3 seeds, before crushing the defending champion, top seed Mark Chapman in the championship match, 9/7, 9/4, 9/7.

“Hopes are very high. All I have to do is sit and get a lot of training. My major focus is to get as much mental preparedness,” Findley told the StandPoint last week.

Poole was also successful in her march to the Women’s Open title by chopping down the SVG quartet of Alisa Alvis, Amber Glasgow, Greta Primus and Sherian Slater.

Both Findley and Pole are training for the Caribbean Squash Championships with Australian coach, Joe Knibbs, a former World Number 10 seeded player.

Findley and Poole help propel the Virgin Islands as a new rival to the powerful SVG squad, splitting the individual titles and finishing as runner-up in the team event.

“It was really a good tournament for the BVI, we were focused on performing well and we did, especially the veterans, they were magnificent,” said Findley.

The Men’s Over 50 division was dominated by the Virgin Islands, as they claimed the top three positions leaving Vincentians Keith Boyea, Leroy Lewis and John Horne to settle for 4th through 6th placed respectively.

The team event of the OECS Championships saw the VI, St. Lucia and St. Vincent fielding teams in the Men’s and Veterans divisions, with St. Vincent claiming the overall title with the Men’s team crushing both St. Lucian and the VI.
