The Caribbean is renowned throughout the world for its natural beauty, which attracts people from all over the world. Unfortunately, the Caribbean is prone to natural disasters – hurricanes especially. Household elements exposed to the outdoor environment fall victims to hurricanes and people are forced to secure their “safe havens” even more. This calls for the usage of building materials that can offer much needed security. Keeping in mind the terrible effect of natural disasters, suppliers of building materials continuously offer products that help combat hurricanes.

An innovative solution to this problem is Drake’s Traders Ltd, in Fish Bay, an exclusive distributor of PGT Winguard impact –resistant windows and doors.

Winguard is a technology that has been around for over 10 years and can be applied to single hung (push-up), casement (shutter-like), or horizontal roller horizontally sliding) windows.

Glass can be one of your worst enemies in severe weather storms, but by planning ahead, your dwelling can be prepared for the worst.

Whenever unprotected glass is broken, shards can be sent flying causing severe injury to people and major damage to property.

Drake’s Traders offers it’s hurricane resistant products to the territory to help lessen these fears. The WinGuard brand can sustain winds up to 125miles per hour or prevent forced entry by burglars, while normal windows shatter easily upon contact. A special silicone glazing process is used to keep the glass from breaking away from its frame.

Drake’s Traders Managing Director, Christen Esser said his quality products are guaranteed to withstand the forces of wind. But that is not the only element of danger.

“Flying debris, that’s where the damage comes in, the glass will break but the material used to sandwich the glass (polyvinylbutyral laminate) protects it from splintering,” he cautioned.

Managing Director of Drake’s Traders Christen Esser, in storeAn extra cost may be incurred by being too protective, but think about the savings you will earn when you visit your insurance agency in search of a cost-effective insurance policy.

In addition to these technologies being able to withstand high winds, roofing is considered a top priority, though less technical and will remain intact once the correct applications are in place.

According to Julio Jimenez, Sales Clerk and Kitchen Designer at Drake’s Traders, any galvanized roof can withstand a storm as long as adequate screws, closures and resistant sheets are used.

“We do not sell hurricane shutters, they are independent of the windows functionality, extra expense both in maintenance and repairs. While it offers maximum security during a hurricane, it is quite unpleasing for storage and space,” he chided.

In addition to these products, Drake’s Traders offers a wide range of tiles, doors, patio furniture among appliances with its ‘Ace Brand’ Paint Center, the newest addition to the company.

The Paint Center which offers a complete line of Ace products was opened in the “One Stop Shop” facility in February.

The family owned company, started out with dad, Dieter Esser, from very humble beginnings in September 1981, operating out of a makeshift office from the comforts of their home in Slaney Hill, but later took a dramatic twist from “Rags to Riches” into a multi-million dollar industry.

The 25-year-old company is anchored by both brothers, Christen and Alex, and cushioned by their very hard-working staff of 12. “We have filled the niche in the BVI that was missing, we can’t complain about business,” added Alex. The company celebrates its 25th anniversary in September.
