Of the 186 students who graduated from the ESHS this year, 22 students received top honours and 37 received awards. However, the real story lies in the fact that there were 85 Grade I recipients; 53 Grade II recipients; and 48 Grade III recipients. That data speaks volumes, and if this is an indication of what to expect in future years, the Territory would be granting more and more scholarships to students to further their studies, and effect churning out great sons and daughters of the soil to further advance this Natures Little Secret. This year, ESHS also accomplished another feat that was proudly announced by the Education Minister, Andrew Fahie the overall academics of the High school this year ranked as one of the top classes in the history of the school. Beaming with pride, Minister Fahie revealed to the graduates that for the first time in secondary schools history, there were recipients privileged to be awarded scholarships in recognition of the Territorys first Chief Minister and Premier. Next years batch of students will take note of this exemplary achievement, and would have to step up to the plate to continue this trend. The preverbal bar has been set high. As Valedictorian Odiesia Daley, put it in her speech, The mind is like an iceberg, it floats with one-seventh of its bulk above water. It is what lies beneath, the latent talents and abilities that have the most power. Tap into them, strengthen them, so that you may become more than one-seventh of a person, floating on lifes ocean. Such a powerful quote from a brilliant young lady, these words should be a motto for all students. Most of us have passed through the education system, and could relate to being tyrants at times. How many of us refused to get out of bed, missed classes, lied about homework and faked illnesses to get an extension for a test you never studied for? However, as the time drew near to complete our secondary level of education many of us buckled down and burned the mid-night oil. Despite being misunderstood at times, todays youths are cognizant of the fact that education is the key to unlocking their future and at the graduation ceremony held last Friday, expressions of satisfaction were evident on the faces of the students, teachers and parents. Now as they go into the world in pursuit of their hopes and dreams, Salutatorian Britney Grant advised her peers to stay focused on their dreams and goals. She warned them that going through life on a high school diploma alone only puts a limit on their voice and the level of respect they receive. She pointed out and rightfully so that ESHS is just the beginning an opportunity to grasp, and urged her peers not to be caught up with the idea that hard work is out of style. Let us continue to work hard and do it for ourselves and our future, Grant challenged her peers. And from all indication, it seems that her suggestion will not fall on deaf ears. Good luck Class of 2008!!! Comments (0)
