Students from the A-3 class of the BVI Dance School performing “Reflections’ last Saturday during the BVI Dance Fest. Sensational, memorable and entertaining are some of the many words used to describe the performances at the BVI Children’s Dance Fest 2008, at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall in Road Town On Saturday June 28.

The family oriented package, featured tiny tots to mid-teen dancers, mingled with the finishing touch of a dance instructor’s steady strides.

All choreographed with a theme in mind, from the animated series ‘Under the Sea’, a comical ‘Spoonful of Sugar’ garnished with the ever so beautiful sound track of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ among others.

Each musical selection coupled with performances kept the audience quiet attentive with the ever so often flash of a camera capturing a “Kodak moment” of their love ones, decked out in the most beautiful costume befitting for a renowned character.

The charming youth group consisting of children ranging from ages 3-4, wooed the large audience with their swirls and turns as they carefully patterned the moves of their instructor Lisa Catalano, performing Reflections, based on the movie Mulan. One can only imagine the patience required for these ‘cutie-pies’ to deliver such a breathe-taking package.

Over 200 kids, most of them students at the BVI Dance School had the estimated audience of over 1000 on the edge of their seats. Among the crowd’s favorite was teen sensation Roger Pemberton and his partner Monique Williams, who graced the stage with their talented ballet moves leaving the crowd in frenzy, doing the ‘Can Can’, an Intermediate Ballet selection choreographed by the founder of the Dance School, Sandy Lyons.

Then it was time for the choreographer performances, a very riveting and energetic selection done by Sarah Penny, doing her thing at the Lel Tango Flamenco, a dance which she adopted out of Spain . Penny began teaching the 4-year-olds at the Dance school since last year. She also serves as the Assistant Producer for the CADA Players and recently helped develop the “Flambeau” project.

Lisa Catalano during a farewell performance stunned the crowd with her every move during her performance of a solo entitled “Uninvited”. Catalano, who is presently teaching dance at the Elmore Stoutt High School , will return to her homeland in Canada this month.

Among the Participating groups were the Elmore Stoutt High School Dancers, Bethany Baptist, Francis Lettsome Primary, St. Georges Liturgical Dancers, Praise Angels of New Life Baptist.

In bringing down the curtains on another tremendous year of Dance Fest in the Territory, a very excited Lyons said she is pleased to see all the work put in had paid off.

“These hard working individuals give their time and talents to promote and assist children of our community to learn the art and joy of dance,” she added.

The BVI Dance School will continue to inspire and pave the way for young dancers in the Territory, making each Dance Fest a success, Lyons noted.
