Team BVI shared in five of the 18 meet records set during last weekend’s Leeward Islands Jr. Track and Field Championships at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds, which saw St. Kitts amassing 140.33 points to retain the championship.

Most outstanding individual awards went to the U.S. Virgin Islands Juan Robles in the Under 20 Boys Division, while the BVI’s Chantel Malone took top honours in the Girls division, winning the 400 meters and Long Jump with meet and national records. Although she had not tested the high bar in three years, she equalled the High Jump national and meet record and collected a meet record in the Triple Jump.

“I think my performance was good throughout the meet,” said Malone, who raced team mate and former national record holder, Ashley Kelly to the line in an exciting 400 meters race in a time of 54.58 seconds to erase her own national record. In the high jump, Malone scaled 5’5", while in the triple jump she reached 40’10¼”.

“I just came out with the mentality to improve my personal best. In the long jump I just went out and execute. For the 400 meter I just went out and competed,” Malone stated.

In the 800 Meters, Samantha John, clocked 2 minutes 16.14 seconds to set a new national and meet recor.

The under17 relay quartet of Kaetia Maduro, Darnetia Robinson, Britney Wattley and Kanishque Todman smashed the 4x100 meter relay meet record with a time of 47.86 seconds.

At the end of the two-day event, the BVI placed second with 89.67 points, followed by Nevis with 74, Antigua with 36, the U.S. Virgin Islands had 29, Anguilla 18 and Montserrat managed 8 points.

“The BVI performance from the girls stand point coming in close to St. Kitts was pretty good,” said BVI Amateur Athletics Association president, Ephraim Penn.

“Unfortunately we did not have as much athletes in all the events and that hampered our overall achievement and its something we have to work.

In a championship its more difficult, you could win a in few events and if you are not spread out and have quite  a number of athletes in a couple of events you can fall short and that is what happened with us,” Penn noted.
