After setting a blistering time of 54.58 seconds to lower the 400 meter national records last weekend at the Leeward Islands Junior Championships, Chantel Malone departed the Territory earlier this week to compete against the world’s leading junior athletes at the IAAF World Jr. Championships which begins next Tuesday in Poland.

“I am pretty confident going into it and I just have to stay focused and not be side tracked by the crowd,” Malone told the StandPoint just before she departed.

Malone qualified for the 400 meters and the triple jump and landed at 40’10¼” last weekend as a tune up to the IAAF event.

Malone competed last Saturday and Sunday at the A.O Shirley Ground under the watchful eye of her University of Texas coach, Rose Brimmer.

“I thought the performances were excellent, she had PR in the 400 and the long jump. I never saw her high jump, but she told us at the University that she can perform in the event and I am impressed,” said Brimmer.

She noted that Malone will need to be more aggressive in the triple jump at the IAAF meet.

“In the triple jump she just has to work on having a good finish, attacking the board and not holding off. In the 400 she will need to finish fast especially in the 60 meters, because the other girls are going to come on strong,” said Brimmer

A record total of 183 nations are competing this year, but Malone’s departure has left behind unanswered questions since three other athletes –Britney Wattley, Samantha John and Ashely Kelly- had qualified for the prestigious games, but did not get the nod from the BVI Amateur Athletic Association (BVIAA).

The decision has led to Fast Lane Track Club (FLTC) coach Dag Samuels resigning from the association, but officials would not comment on the decision to disapprove of the other three athletes’ participation at the event.

However, a senior official close to the association said that the financier, theBVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC) had expressed concerns over the three athletes opting out of the BVI Invitational which was held on June 21.
