The women from St. Lucia came determined to put on a good show, and on Sunday last, they defeated defending champions, Antigua’s Court Eagles to claim the top honours in the 3rd Annual Regional Netball Tournament held on Tortola last weekend.

Led by tournament MVP, Barbara Theobalds, who scored 28 points from 58 attempts, Shamrock dominated the encounter 32-12 after leading 16-8 at the half. She was assisted by Shirma Benti, who shot 50 percent, scoring 4 of her 8 attempts.

Court Eagles’ Goal Scorer, Khandi Jones shot a high percentage, sinking 10 of her 11 attempts, while Ruby Williams scored 2 of 4 attempts.

Shamrock who captured the prize for best dressed uniform, played unbeaten throughout the three-day tournament, which was hosted by the local All Stars Netball Club.

“The tournament was very successful. The standard of the plays were also good and we got a lot of support from the public, who turned out on all three nights of the tournament,” said All Stars Netball Club president, Sualan Browne.

Dominica’s BJ Nets triumphed over the Buzzers 18-10 after leading 10-8 at the half to place second on goal point average by virtue of an earlier tournament win against Court Eagles.

BJ Nets’ Goal Shooter Lisa James was the leading scorer with 16 of her 23 attempts and was backed up by Florisca Pollock with 2 of 8 attempts.

Buzzers was led by Veda Austir who had 4 of 11 attempts and Dinia Joseph’s 5 of 16 attempts.

The best defensive player award went to Rosemary Blossoms of the BJ Nets. In an exciting display of shooting skills, Lisa James of BJ Nets stole the first prize, while Jennifer Nanton of Buzzers placed second.

Meanwhile, the most discipline team award went to Highlights from Nevis.

Commenting on the participation of the three local teams, which were edged out of top honours, Browne said, “It’s all about the standard of netball that the other teams played. Because the sport is not dominant here, we have to rely on coaches coming in so we don’t necessary get the training we would like to have.”
