BVI’s top junior squash players leave for the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships 2008 in Bermuda next week, with high expectations of winning in a number of categories over the ten days of competition.

Having dominated the recent OECS championships in St Lucia during March, the BVI team includes the OECS number 1 in under 13 boys, under 13 girls, under 15 girls and under 19 boys.  The BVI players, now training six days a week, will sharpen up their fitness over the next week and look favourites to win a number of individual age groups in Bermuda.

At team level, Joe Kneipp, BVI’s Professional Squash Coach commented “This is the strongest team we have ever taken to the Caribbean Juniors and we really have a good chance of a top 3 finish in the boys team division, which would be incredible against such squash giants as Guyana, Trinidad, Barbados, Venezuela, Jamaica and Bermuda.”

Added Mark Chapman BVI Squash Rackets President “Our professional squash coach Joe Kneipp has brought our juniors to a new level over the past six months and all are now ready for the toughest competition of their lives.  When you put together one of the top coaches in the world, the outstanding facilities provided by Tortola Sports Club and a total commitment to our juniors from parents, sponsors and the BVI Olympic Committee, only good things can happen to youth sport.  I am very proud of all our players and the great supporters of youth squash in the BVI.”

This Saturday parents of the young players have arranged a silent auction and cocktail party at Tortola Sports Club to raise funds for the ten day trip to Bermuda.  Everyone is welcome on Saturday 5th July 2008 to come to Tortola Sports Club from 7:00 p.m. and join in a send off to our young BVI representatives, many of who are competing at truly international level for the first time.

The team to travel to Bermuda next week includes Coach, Joe Kneipp; U/19 boys, Joe Chapman; U/17 girls, Zoe Sorrentino; U/15 boys, Stefan Joseph; U/13 boys, Rory Thornton; U/13 girls, Erika Sorrentino.
