Once and for all,I would like to address the phrase ‘the green flash.’ It may sound like  a strange idea.or like it’s part of a costume or that I made it up,but it happens to be a scientific phenomena. And an amazing, true sight at that.

Since I saw the first one, near Nantucket Island, many years ago, from a ferry, I have been looking for more. Everywhere in the world, but especially in the British Virgin Islands. And, mind you, we talk about it, often, with sailors, guests, visitors and friends who live here.It is a grand treat to see one.

Now,you might wonder, how is this done? Do you look up at the moon and hope it turns green? Do you look at a rain-bow and expect all the other colors to fade, except green? Do you wonder if a cloud will suddenly have a green circle around it? NO! None of those are possibilities,so don’t look . The trick to seeing one is quite particular.

There is a recipe for this looking. It happens to be at sun-set. And you must be both curious and patient. Maybe if I tell you precisely what to do,you will do it? Here goes.

find a horizon,in the distance make sure the sky is clear NO CLOUDS find out what time the sun sets, by watching carefully do not STARE into the sun, ever now,sit in a chair or stand and WATCH relax here goes…..just as the sun is going into the sea or just before the sun disappears behind a distant mountain, like St.John, just then, that last second, BINGO, the sun will turn GREEN HURRAH,you have just seen your first ‘green flash’
