The Magistrate’s Court on Tortola is moving back to John’s Hole following the conclusion of extensive repair work to the court building.

Deputy Secretary in the Deputy Governor’s Office Ms. Arlene Smith said the Magistrate’s Court will be closed to the public from Tuesday, July 15 through Friday, July 18 to facilitate the move. It will re-open for business on Monday, July 21.

Arrest matters will be dealt with at the Road Town Police Station as required, Ms. Smith noted.

The court building at John’s Hole was badly damaged by fire in January. Since then, extensive work was carried out to restore the building. The project included repairs to the roof, complete refurbishment of the courtroom, and the replacement of several wall panels throughout the building.

Court was temporarily relocated to the Prospect Reef Resort Reef House Conference Room while the repairs were carried out.

The Magistrate’s Court is one component of the Territory’s justice system. The court hears summary criminal matters, conducts preliminary inquiries into indictable offences, and deals with quasi-criminal and civil matters. The Magistracy also consists of the Coroner’s Court, Youth Court,

Liquor Licensing Court
, and
Property Tax Court
