Yamilka George crowned Teen Diva at the EE/LL Community CenterThe Virgin Islands can expect more from Yamilka George – a promising young Diva who captured the crown at the Miss Teen Diva Pageant on Saturday at the East End/Long Look Community Center.

The 13-year-old aspiring model and pediatrician, who “set her goals and dreams far into the sunshine”, topped the night’s seven categories in her Party and School Wear which earned her the coveted awards of  Miss Popularity, Miss Intellect and Miss Photogenic ahead of her two competitors.

Miss Congeniality winner, 13-year-old Omani Prince, wooed the crowd with her every appearance and was adjudged first-runner up. She also took the Miss Poise, Best Futuristic Wear and Best Ballroom Wear prizes.

The senior among the Divas was 15-year-old Mirveline Charles, who topped the African Wear segment in an “empress-like” green outfit, trimmed with rich gold, representing the vegetation of Africa.

The Divas amidst a backdrop of blue and white stage décor complimenting their outfits, captured the medium sized crowd with their multi-colored party wear and creativity of their designed fashioned from plastic.

Local artistes thrilled the crowd through their many performances from dance to the cultural lyrics of Macabe and company. The Church Boys had their hands filled serenading the beauties with their sultry blended voices.

The pageant, which was held for the second time, was formed to motivate young girls living in the community to do positive things with their lives, especially those who possess a passion for modeling.

According to the organizer of the pageant, Camille Merry, the pageant takes a twist from the others held here in the Territory in terms of the categories.

“I love pageants but most have the same segments, so I decided to do something creative, different and something fresh for the pageant industry,” she added.

Despite her disappointment with the low turn out from the community, the organizer was pleased with the contestants’ performances after their many practices each Saturday which began in March.

A very excited George told StandPoint that she knew she would take the crown from beginning because she had the confidence.

“It was a wonderful experience, designing my Futuristic Wear was my greatest challenge. I am looking forward to represent the BVI at the Fashion Week Show in St. Thomas in November.” she exclaimed.

The Diva advises young people to have a high self esteem and follow their heart and dreams. George’s Chaperone and Art teacher, Camille Wilson added that the Diva made a tremendous turn-around and from the outset, playing an important role in designing her wear.

“She put her speech together with my suggestions, it was really a joint effort and I am really happy for her,” she added.
