The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force looks forward to the formation of a West End Action Committee as a positive outcome of its last community meeting held in West End area.

The meeting which covered a number of crime reduction initiatives included presentations which encouraged the creation of an action committee that could form a consensus on matters and make representation on issues affecting the area.

One of the speakers, Head of the Crime Prevention Unit Inspector Patrick Harewood, noted that an action committee can be a great resource to many divisions with Government and particularly Police on matters related to security within communities.

“In order to fight crime and find ways to reduce it, people in the community must come together to look into the West End affairs and do a SWAT analysis to find out the strengths and weaknesses…and foster the needed support for the strengthening the positive attributes within the community,” Inspector Harewood noted.

In support of the action committee, Head of the West End Division, Chief Inspector Gregory Alleyne noted the benefits that were derived as a result of actions taken by a small community group in Belmont Estate.

“Through information received from the Belmont Estate Association, individuals who had burglarised several homes in the area were arrested and later imprisoned. The network was able to provide updates on other activities with that area,” the Chief Inspector noted

The Police Community Meeting also saw presentations from the Commissioner Reynell Frazer, Superintendent Roy Stoutt, Head of the Anti-drug and Violence Task Force Acting Superintendent Alwin James and Head of the Traffic Division Inspector Kenrick Headley.

The Police committee meeting ended with a presentation on the Cadet Corps by Sergeant Rawle Gibbons and a question and answer session.

The Eastern and Western Community Policing Division within the Royal Virgin Islands organized this meeting and the Division is planning to host several other meetings in various districts to outline police plans to fight crime in the Territory and emphasize the benefits of communities working in partnership with the Police to tackle crime. The public is encouraged to come out in support.
