Since acquiring a license in December 2007, Digicel is yet to announce a date for its service roll out, but officials have disclosed that the company may be eyeing a start-up date of sometime before the end of 2008.

Senior officials from the company recently accompanied a group of local journalist on a working visit to St. Kitts to view the company’s operations on the island, which has similar demographics and topography to the Virgin Islands.

Digicel (BVI) Branch Manager, Richard Stanton was among the contingent that accompanied the media and he outlined that the St. Kitts footprint is also applicable to the Virgin Islands.

“Everywhere I go people are asking when are we going to launch our services and products. The excitement is definitely there,” Stanton stated.

He noted that prior to the official launch, there will be a flurry of messages appearing in windows and Digicel signs throughout the Territory.

“No one is going to miss us. We are going to be on every island in the BVI,” Stanton stated, while noting that the company does not promise what it cannot deliver.

In some markets, the company has been able to secure 10,000 customers within 10 days of operations, Stanton noted.

He outlined that in the Virgin Islands, the company intends to hand over management to locals once operations have been launched. This he said has been the case in St. Kitts where 90 percent of the staff are locals and Dominica which is 100 percent run by locals.

He said that Digicel will offer some 20 direct employment opportunities and an additional 150-200 indirect employment.

Digicel (BVI) Branch Manager, Richard Stanton“What people in the BVI can expect from Digicel is better value, better choice, better service, better coverage, community support and Digicel offers lots of fun for consumers. People are just underserved by the incumbents,” Stanton noted

During the media interaction, questions were posed about the ability of Digicel to provide coverage on sea especially sailing channels.

Emma Hynes from the Digicel Jamaica head office outlined that the company has been able to serve the sailing community in Trinidad and Tobago effectively, and also offer good coverage to a number of small islands off of the T&T coast.

Stanton also acknowledged the company’s intention to hold consultations with community groups on youth and development projects, adding that community service is an essential role for the company in the Virgin Islands.

The Virgin Islands is the 24th market for Digicel, which has earmarked $15 million as its initial investment to build a state-of-the-art network in the Territory.

The Digicel media trip to St. Kitts was conducted from July 4-6 and included a cruise to Nevis compliments of the island’s Tourism Minister and full access to the fifth and final One Day International match at Warner Park between West Indies and Australia.
