All-rounder Neil NilesThe BVI Cricket Association has named all-rounder Neil Niles as captain of the territory’s cricket team for the upcoming sub-regional three-day and one-day tournaments, which begin next week.

Niles, a right-handed batsman and right arm medium pace bowler, has earned the confidence of the association following a series of sterling performances for the Police Cricket Club in the recently-concluded domestic 20-20 league played at the Greenland Ground in East End.

Although Niles was not captain, his performances with both bat and ball led his team to a semi-final place against the Vincies, a game the Police ended up losing in a close encounter. Throughout the tournament, he also proved his worth as a valuable fielder.

The experience of Niles at this level is also well entrenched. He has represented the BVI cricket team in previous Leeward Islands Cricket Association tournaments, as well as at the two Stanford 20-20 competitions played to date. He also toured England with the Police cricket team in 2004.

Vice-captain of the team is wicketkeeper/batsman Daniel Singh, who has also previously represented the BVI at the national level, including Stanford 20-20 tournaments, and on Police cricket tours to England and South Africa. Singh was also captain of the Cavaliers Cricket team which won the domestic 20-20 competition three weeks ago.

Last week, the BVICA named 13 players to represent the territory in the 2008 LICA three-day and NAGICO one-day tournaments. The naming of the 13-man squad followed the selection of 24 players who were called to commence training at the Greenland Ground.

The 13-man squad is Neil Niles (captain), Daniel Singh (vice-captain), Sheldon John, Lennox Sammuel, Maxford Pipe, Dorian Auguiste, Vishal Bharat, Austin McDowell, Bront DeFreitas, Vaden Walker, Bryan Daley, Dennisford Brown, and Kwesi Sinclair.

The BVI’s first game is against Nevis on Thursday, July 17.
