Team BVI makes a spirited challenge in the five races on SundayRacing from behind and in good conditions for sailing, St. Thomas compiled a solid performance on Sunday winning three of the five ‘Gold Fleet’ races to take home top honours in the 10th annual Premier's Cup Youth Regatta (previously the Chief Minister's Cup) at the Nanny Cay Resort.

Skippered by Tyler Rice, St. Thomas ended the two-day competition on 24 points after being in third place on Saturday behind the home-town BVI crew and group leader Trinidad and Tobago who retuned to the event after a brief absence.

The BVI fell behind after picking up two thirds, a first, a fifth and was disqualified on the second race after a protest was filed.

“I think on Saturday we did pretty well although we got disqualified on one race. I just told everybody that we have to work harder and the chemistry really got around. The conditions today (Sunday) were relatively good. The wind was 10 to 12 knots and we came out with a couple of early wins, which put us back into contention. The competition was really good,” Rice told the StandPoint.

Trinidad and Tobago slipped to second with a total of 29.25 points while BVI sailing without Alec Anderson who is Denmark, racked up the third spot with 30 points. St Lucia finished fourth on 36.75 points and St. Croix fifth with 37 points, were the other two teams in the ‘Gold Fleet’.

In the ‘Silver Fleet’, The Cayman Islands led throughout the competition and ended on 12.25 points. They were followed by Anguilla on 24.25 points, Puerto Rico 27.25 points and Bequia 32.5 points.

“Everything changed form day to day. These young men and women were using some well maintained boats, but they still managed to break things on them…that just shows you the level of competition, because these young men and women were pushing those boats really hard,” remarked Tom Gerker, one of the organisers of the event.

Puerto Rico claimed the Team pride Award for keeping their camp area clean and tidy, while St. Croix copped the Sportsmanship prize.

The event which was sponsored by CCT for the 10th year was also supported by other organisations and businesses.
