Tortola Purple Dragons finish strong at Grand Slam 2008A group from the Purple Dragons (Tortola) finished in the top five during this year's Open Karate Grand Slam hosted by two amazing Senseis of the Purple Dragon Don Jitsu Ryu System in the beautiful Cayman Islands.

On July 4th and 5th, the Purple Dragon Tortola BVI team represented the British Virgin Islands, flying it's flag proudly at the Cayman Grand Slam 2008 Open Karate Tournament.

The BVI team once again proved themselves to be a force to be reckoned with.

The Purple Dragon Tortola team was led by Sensei Abeana Baptiste and Instructor Verne Turnbull with a combined force of 20 competitors - a small team in comparison to many of the other countries, but the BVI team fought hard and stayed strong and was able to capture 4th place overall at the event. Overall the Purple Dragon Tortola Team ranked 2nd amongst the competitors in terms of percentage.

Excellent demonstrations and competition were provided by Purple Dragon Trinidad who ranked 1st, Purple Dragon Cayman Islands ranked 2nd and Future Leaders Eagle Karate School of Jamaica ranked 3rd.

Sensei Floyd Baptiste and Sensei Geddis Hislop were successful in having many competitors registered at their tournament from Trinidad, Grenada, St. Lucia, Antigua, Tortola, Jamaica, Brazil, Florida, New York, Boston, Mississippi, Canada and the Cayman Islands.

This grand event hosted competitors from over 10 countries of different regions of the world. From Brazil to Boston the martial arts was alive and kicking this past weekend.

The Purple Dragon Tortola BVI branches and special team of competitors would like to express our golden showers of gratitude to Professor Don Jacob (owner/founder), Sensei Floyd Baptiste and Sensei Geddes Hislop (tournament hosts), our kind sponsors NAGICO Insurance and AMS Trustees Limited.

We would also like to thank the general community who supported us during our fundraisers, parents, guardians and well wishers.
