We are making this plea to The Honourable Omar W. Hodge, Minister of Natural Resources & Labour and The Honourable Ralph T. O'Neal, Premier of the British Virgin Islands and 9th District Representative. We are 100% against the construction of a fisherman's ramp in the middle of St. Thomas Bay Beach.
St. Thomas Bay Beach is one of the most popular beaches on Virgin Gorda because of its white sand, clear blue water and close proximity to residents. To our knowledge no public meetings were held in reference to this project and project plans were never brought to the attention of the people in Virgin Gorda.
We have spoken to many residents on the island and most of them are very much unaware of what a ramp of this magnitude is and how it will actually affect the natural beauty of this beach.
Instead of dropping a huge slab of concrete in our beautiful blue waters, how about BEAUTIFICATION!?! St. Thomas Bay Beach is one of the first impressions of Virgin Gorda for visitors arriving via boat, therefore any development made to this beach should be for the purpose of beautification and enhancement purposes only. E.g. planting of trees, and upkeep of thatched beach bohios.
Instead of concrete how about installation of a gate to prevent residents from parking and driving on the sand!?! Absolutely no vehicles should be allowed access onto the beach. Presently vehicles are driving on the sandy area of the beach for parking and pulling boats out of the water. These activities are particularly destructive because it causes disturbance (rutting) of the beach by the vehicle tracks.
These tracks eventually destroy the natural beauty of the sand since they cannot be easily renewed by tide and wind action. The installation of a locked gate with an access path for pedestrians will help to eliminate this problem.
We are very much aware of the need for a fisherman's ramp in Virgin Gorda, however, St. Thomas Bay Beach is not the location for it. We are asking that this project be stopped and further research be conducted on finding an alternate and appropriate location.
PLEASE SAY NO TO THE DESTRUCTION AND YES TO BEAUTIFICATION OF ST.THOMAS BAY BEACH
