Digicel BVI Ltd. on Friday announced a major sponsorship deal with the territory’s leading local and international athlete, Tahesia Harrigan. Both parties recently entered into a multi year contract.

Named by the OECS Sports Desk as most outstanding female athlete in 2006 for her top performances in international meets, Ms. Harrigan’s sprint career began while studying in Tallahassee , Florida .   Her illustrious track and field record has seen her qualify as a finalist at every game she has competed in so far, including the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne , Australia in 2006; the Central American and Caribbean Games in Cartagena , Colombia in 2006; and the Pan Am Games in Rio , Brazil in 2007.

At the March 2008 World Indoor Track & Field Championships in Valencia, Spain, Harrigan took home the bronze medal in the Women's 60m, posting a new BVI national record of 7.09 seconds – while on June 21, she ran in the BVI for the first time since 2002, winning the 100m race. She is currently on a European tour prior to her appearance in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , China .

Under the terms of the agreement with Digicel, Ms. Harrigan will provide promotional services for the company, including attending and participating in marketing and public relations events and company functions. In addition to the agreed compensation, she will be given incentive payments should she achieve Olympic and or World Championship medals.

This latest tie up is another great example of Digicel’s passionate commitment to supporting athletics throughout the region. Digicel also currently sponsors Jamaica ’s Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man; and aspiring stars St. Lucian marathon runner, Zepherinus Joseph, and Caymanian sport shooter, Josephina McLean.

Digicel also has a long affinity with Special Olympics across the Caribbean . In 2007, Digicel provided funding to support a cricket squad of fifteen players and three coaches to participate in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai .

“There are striking similarities between the Digicel brand and Tahesia’s success as a world class athlete,” said Alan Bates, Chief Executive Officer, Digicel BVI.

“At Digicel, we are clear that delivering to customers what they want and deserve comes down to hard work, commitment and a constant quest for excellence. Likewise, Tahesia’s outstanding athletic achievements come from hard work, focus and from constantly pushing herself to do even better. We’re proud to be supporting her and look forward to lots more of these types of partnerships with the local community in the coming months and years.”

Tahesia Harrigan commented, “It’s great to have this kind of support – especially in the run up to a major event like the Olympics. Digicel has associations with some of the biggest sporting names in the region – I’m proud to join the Digicel sporting family.”
