Chivon Fahie receiving the MACPA award from Dr. Jim McKinney, CPA. Chivon Fahie, a VI student studying at the University of Maryland , College Park , was the recipient of the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants Outstanding Student Award.  This prestigious award is given annually to one student at each university in Maryland who demonstrates high academic excellence in the study of Accounting.

Ms. Fahie’s excellence went well beyond academics. During the past year, she served as an Accounting Teaching Scholar for Principles of Accounting and was the President of the University of Maryland ’s chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). Fahie as President took a struggling organization and increased its membership from three to over 50, tripled the number of meetings and professional events, increased community and charitable involvement, and energized accounting firms such as KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers to present at NABA events and to contribute significant funds to the organization. She also led NABA into recognition as an official student organization by the Smith Undergraduate Student Association and NABA is now one of the strongest student organizations in the R.H. Smith School of Business at the University.

In recognition of her accomplishments with NABA, Fahie was awarded the 2008 Robert H. Smith Dean's Service Award and she was featured, together with her Executive Board, as the cover story for the NABA Achieve Newsletter. This newsletter is circulated to NABA professional and student members throughout the entire United States .

Dr. Jim McKinney, who is the Faculty Advisor for NABA, said she met Fahie when she became a student in my Auditing class.

“She quickly struck me as a student who was highly intelligent, responsible, and outspoken. She frequently participated in classroom discussions in an assertive manner demonstrating both a command of the facts and knowledge of the material discussed. She obviously did very well in the course,” Dr. McKinney said.

The NABA Faculty Advisor added that Fahie possessed the qualities that NABA needed to take the organization to a higher level and I encouraged her to run for the President position.

“I believe Chivon's leadership has been outstanding and exceptional.  I am proud that she was my student and that I had an opportunity to interact with her. I expect to see great accomplishments from Chivon in the future,” Dr. McKinney added

Fahie successfully executed her demanding duties as President of NABA and as an Accounting Teaching Scholar while simultaneously maintaining her academic standing on the Dean’s List.  She officially graduates from the University of Maryland in August 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems.  She will begin sitting for the CPA exam in October.
