Detective Penn and Ciro demonstrated a narcotic search on a vessel docked at the Moorings. The canine found small parcels containing heroine and marijuana that were hidden on board in small compartments.
The newest addition to the ranks of the Royal BVI Police Force (RVIPF) is specially trained in detecting narcotics with her handler Detective Brian Penn.  During a weekly Rotary Club Meeting last Thursday at the Moorings, the force publicly displayed the skills of its newest member, “Ciro” (pronounced SEE-RO) – a German Shepard.

“Policing in these modern times has elevated to a level where we are required to utilise all available tools of the trade to solve crimes.  Hence, police dogs are becoming common- place in law enforcement,” said Commissioner of Police Reynell Frazer who publicly expressed gratitude to members of Rotary Club.

The Rotary Club of Tortola donated $25,000 to the RVIPF in 2006 for the establishment of its Canine Unit. The donation was part of the proceeds from the Club’s annual Grand Affair fundraising auction.

Commissioner Frazer, who was the guest speaker at the luncheon, thanked the Rotary Club for its support in the fight against crime in the VI.

He mentioned that another officer is presently in the United States receiving training in dog handling and that the Force’s Canine Unit will be equipped with two trained dogs and two trained handlers in the near future.

“I must take this opportunity to thank Wade Smith, Comptroller of Customs and his K9 team who have been faithful in lending assistance in many successful police operations. We will continue to work in partnership with a primary objective to reduce crime in our territory,” Frazer assured the gathering.

Detective Penn told Stand Point the dual purpose canine underwent six weeks training separately before he was introduced to her for an additional eight weeks session. With training received in protection, narcotics, and explosives, Penn and his partner are already recorded among two successful operations since the Canine Unit was formed.

The Virgin Island’s Government has provided a vehicle for the purpose of transporting the police dog.

“The RVIPF is very fortunate to have to the Rotary Club of Tortola which has chosen to partner with the RVIPF to help serve our community by making it safer for all its citizenry and visitors alike,” the Commissioner concluded.

Image The Dotted Line - Breaking the cycle

What’s the point of expressing bewilderment at the state of violent crime increase in these islands if we are not prepared to do something about it? Gun crimes seem to have gone out of control. Ninety percent of these types of criminal activity have gone as mysteries. No one knows who done it.
