Caribbean Cycling Championships qualifiers begin Sunday Print E-mail

ImageThe BVI Cycling Federation is preparing to host two major qualifying race meets for the 8th Caribbean Cycling Championships which will be held in St. Vincent instead of Trinidad and Tobago as was previously announced.

Race meets begin this Sunday with the National Championship Time Trial, and continues with the Jason Bally Memorial/National Championship Road Race which is set for Sunday, October 5.

According to press statement issued by the Federation, the time trial starts at Deli France (Old CTL building) on Wickham’s Cay II, travelling west to the Frenchman’s Cay junction before returning to Deli France via the Port Purcell roundabout covering a distance of distance is 20.2 miles (33km).

Riders will depart at one minute intervals and follow vehicles will be allowed.

The top three finishers in the men and women categories will automatically qualify for the regional championships.

Cyclists should assemble by 6:15 am for registration at the Deli France ahead of the schedule start at 7 am.  The Jason Bally Memorial/National Championship Road Race takes a different course enveloping 60 miles.

Beginning on the

James Walter Francis Highway
, riders will travel down to Frenchman’s Cay junction in West End.

At the junction, the race will turn and head back east towards Road Town, then take the looping hills on the way to the Airport on Beef Island before returning to the Frenchman’s Cay junction in West End. 

From the junction, riders will return to Road Town and ride to the Port Purcell roundabout and sprint for finish along the

James Walter Francis Highway
for the finish.

However, there will be three sprint preems along the course beginning at the basketball course in West End, the top of Sophie Bay hill going toward the airport and the final sprint will be at the start/finish line on the first return to West End.

According to the Federation, the women, juniors, mountain bikes and novices will take the same course expect, their race will wrap up on the trip back from the airport for 40 miles.  The top four men finishers and the top three women finishers will automatically qualify.

The Jason Bally Memorial/National Championship Road Race start time is 8:00 am, but there will be a memorial moment of silence in Sea Cow’s Bay by the Jason Bally plaque 15 minutes later.

Registration begins at 7:00am.

Refreshments will be served after the race. Volunteers are needed for both events and are being asked to call Kathleen at 494-8412 to sign up.
