Related by Humanity, a local concerned citizens group, acknowledged the presence of Alzheimer’s Disease in the BVI, and pledged its commitment to bring more awareness to the public and to provide support for caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients.

Sandra Phillip-Hodge, the organisation’s President said Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementia, which is a progressive, degenerative illness of the brain, mostly found in persons over 65, although rare cases have been found in young people.

Like other chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Hypertension and Heart Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease is believed to be linked to lifestyle and its manifestation can be reduced through healthy living, physically and emotionally, she added.

World Alzheimer’s Day was celebrated September 21, and this year the Alzheimer’s Disease International, (ADI), representing 77 associations around the world, launched its Global Alzheimer’s Disease Charter.

The Global Alzheimer’s Disease Charter is consistent with the protocols of Human Rights Declarations, and include among other goals, “to promote awareness and understanding of the disease”, and “to respect the human rights of people with the disease”. The Charter also recognises that the disease not only affect patients’ abilities, “impacting on all aspects of their life”, [but] “upon others in their lives, particularly those who care for them day by day.”

Image The Dotted Line - Breaking the cycle

What’s the point of expressing bewilderment at the state of violent crime increase in these islands if we are not prepared to do something about it? Gun crimes seem to have gone out of control. Ninety percent of these types of criminal activity have gone as mysteries. No one knows who done it.
