| Local group pledges to support Alzheimer’s patients |

Related by Humanity, a local concerned citizens group, acknowledged the presence of Alzheimers Disease in the BVI, and pledged its commitment to bring more awareness to the public and to provide support for caregivers of Alzheimers patients. Sandra Phillip-Hodge, the organisations President said Alzheimers Disease is the most common form of dementia, which is a progressive, degenerative illness of the brain, mostly found in persons over 65, although rare cases have been found in young people. Like other chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Hypertension and Heart Disease, Alzheimers Disease is believed to be linked to lifestyle and its manifestation can be reduced through healthy living, physically and emotionally, she added. World Alzheimers Day was celebrated September 21, and this year the Alzheimers Disease International, (ADI), representing 77 associations around the world, launched its Global Alzheimers Disease Charter. The Global Alzheimers Disease Charter is consistent with the protocols of Human Rights Declarations, and include among other goals, to promote awareness and understanding of the disease, and to respect the human rights of people with the disease. The Charter also recognises that the disease not only affect patients abilities, impacting on all aspects of their life, [but] upon others in their lives, particularly those who care for them day by day.
