Maxford Pipe celebrates after winning the second leg of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College/Highland Spring Race Series on Virgin Gorda.Maxford Pipe dominated the second leg of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College/Highland Spring Race Series on Virgin Gorda last Saturday in The Valley.

Pipe, a former national footballer and current national and Leeward Islands cricketer, completed the two-miler in 11 minutes 27.04 seconds, improving on his winning time two weeks ago by about 28 seconds. The top four finishers in the men’s category were the same as race one on Virgin Gorda in what was a much faster race for most of the returning competitors - three of whom are past overall male champions.

Defending female champion, Laverne “Ebony” Fahie, led the way for the women in a time of 16 minutes 41.07 seconds and, in the process, assisted Harrigan House (Bregado Flax Educational Centre) to second place in the high school cross country category.  Incidentally, first place went to O’Neal House, led by Laverne’s brother Lishaquah Fahie, in a time of 14 minutes 57.30 seconds.

In the primary school cross country, Earl Wilson Jr. of the Parkers Panthers held the lead, but was unable to capture first place, as he was the sole competitor for his House. Instead, the teams from Corner Stone and Stevens Stallions took first and second places respectively.

There were 44 participants entering the race––an increase of 19 from the first one on the sister island––with an age range of two to 65 years old. Two-year old Teagan Bishop finished in a time of 40 minutes 55.45 seconds, while 65-year old Christina Yates ran the distance in 19 minutes 28.14 seconds.

A new addition to the Virgin Gorda series this year is that of a community team featuring members of the North South Church of God (Holiness) Boys Club, led by Deputy Director of the College’s Virgin Gorda Centre, Steve Lennard.

Defending female champion, Laverne “Ebony” Fahie, led the way for the women in a time of 16 minutes 41.07 seconds. So far the team has competed in both races.

Race Director and Lecturer at HLSCC, Stephanie Russ Penn, said she was delighted at the increased turn out for the second race. However, she said she would like to see an improvement in the numbers for the primary and secondary schools cross country categories.

“It is my hope for the last race on Virgin Gorda to be the biggest ever, so I encourage more young people in the community to come out and participate in the races,” said Mrs. Russ Penn. That race is coming up on November 1 and it will be followed by an awards ceremony.

Main sponsor for the HLSCC race series is Highland Spring Mineral Water, which is distributed by Tico BVI.
