Athletes making territory’s first Commonwealth Youth Games appearance Print E-mail

Sporting history will be made this week, when three athletes from three different schools on Tortola and Virgin Gorda, represent the British Virgin Islands at the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.

The upcoming games for athletes 18 and under, which has nine sports, targets 2000 athletes from 71 countries will run from Oct 12-18.

The BVI’s team which is making its inaugural trek to the games that were first held in Glasgow, Scotland in 2000, with 14 countries attending, departed for Pune yesterday. 

The game’s third edition marks the first time all members of the Commonwealth will attend, after 24 countries participated in the second edition held in Bendigo, Australia.

The BVI will be represented at the games by two track and field athletes, Ramos Pemberton of the Elmore Stoutt High School and Naheem Stevens of Virgin Gorda’s Bregado Flax Educational Center. Both will run the 100 and 200 meters. Deane Fonseca of Cedar School is the other representative and will play in the Tennis singles.

Officials accompanying the athletes are BVI Olympic Committee public relations officer David Thomas and coach Angeleta Bernard.

The BVI’s first participated in the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand in 1990 and has participated in every games since, the last being in 2006 when Squash and Cycling debuted and track and field had representatives as well.  The next Commonwealth Games will be held October 3-14, 2010, in Delhi, India.
