The Coroner’s Inquest into the death of American Tourist Wayne Francis Johanning concluded in the Magistrate’s court on September 30, 2008. A total of 12 witnesses testified at the Inquest, five of them via video-link from the VI to the US.

The deceased, who was 53 years old at the time of his death, was diving in the VI waters with his two sons and a friend when he disappeared on the 19th December 2007.

Remains of his body were recovered in VI waters on December 20, 2007 by VISAR.

A Coroner’s Inquest was held by the Coroner Valerie Stephens. The Inquest commenced on the March 26, 2008.

The jurors had the opportunity to view the remains of the deceased at Davis Funeral Home on September 30. They were also taken to the dive site at Green Cay Jost Van Dyke.

The five-member jury comprising two men and three women concluded that the remains found belongs to Wayne Francis Johanning, a Caucasian male, who died on December 19, 2007 at Green Cay Jost Van Dyke in the territorial waters of the BVI.

The cause of death is unknown/undetermined and the verdict is an open verdict, the jurors concluded  Crown Counsel Tiffany Scatliffe and Police Prosecutor Inspector Jefferson Knight led the evidence on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
