When students turned up for classes at Elmore Stoutt High last Friday, they were greeted by their teachers neatly decked out in the school’s uniform –light blue shirt and navy blue pants/skirt,  much to the fascination of the students who were clearly surprised by the unexpected transformation.

A day filled with humour and excitement was part of the morning’s assembly as students were amazed to see their teachers – who for most part of the day melted into the student population because of their youthful appearance.

The Teachers’ Day transformation at the school was observed locally, prior to a week long schedule of activities to observe World Teachers’ Day last Sunday.

The British Virgin Islands Teachers’ Union and all educators in the Territory are celebrating Teachers Appreciation Week under the theme “Teachers Matter” from October 5-12.

Business teacher and fifth form supervisor, Michele Blyden said it was good to be back in her uniform, after graduating from the institution in 1994. Blyden has been teaching at the school since 2000.

“My former teacher, who is still here, told me I looked the same after many years.

I was able to walk among the students without them taking notice. When they saw us getting out of our vehicles it was lots of laughter,” she exclaimed.

Blyden told StandPoint that despite the humour surrounding the day’s activities, it served to demonstrate the proper dress code in the school as some students are not adhering to the rules.  

President of the BVI Teachers’ Union, Cecil Hodge announced in a press release that for the past years the Union has been organising various events and means of observing World Teachers’ Day which was celebrated on Sunday.  “Even though last year we did not have our usual week long celebration, we still observed Teachers’ Day, because it is important that time is taken to recognise the important role that educators play in our community and in the world in general,” Hodge stated.

He disclosed that a number of activities to celebrate Teachers’ Week 2008 have been organised. The week commenced with a church service at the Church of God of Holiness in Huntums Ghut, and continues with a healthy walk, a volley ball tournament, seminars with Education International officials and a special panel discussion featuring Ministry of Education Representatives.

The BVI Teachers’ Union is encouraging students to show appreciation to the various educators in their schools in observance of Teachers’ Week and onward.
