Thick smoke had quickly engulfed the stand-by generator located at the back of Qwomar Building Complex 1, before firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control with minimal damage.
In the midst of celebrations to mark Fire Safety Awareness Week, the Fire and Rescue Service Department were called into action on Tuesday, containing two separate fires that threatened to raze two prominent Road Town businesses.

Fire-fighters were first summoned to

Rite Way
in Pasea Estate shortly after 8:00 am after staffers reported the smell of smoke in the supermarket, which had opened a few hours earlier.

Delma Maduro, CEO of Roadtown Wholesale said that the building was evacuated and the fire service summoned as a precautionary measure, adding that the origin of the smoke had been from an electrical component.

The store was closed for approximately 30 minutes, while firefighters and electrical engineers combed the building.

A source explained that the problem stemmed from a malfunctioning shaft shield of an air conditioning unit.

A few hours later, the Fire and Rescue Service Department were again summoned, this time answering a call from Qwomar Trading Limited on

Blackburn Road
at about 10:15 am.

Thick plumes of smoke bellowed skyward from a stand-by generator located at the back of Complex 1, but firemen quickly brought the fire under control. The fire resulted in a prolong period of electricity outage to the building forcing the closure of several offices, including Qwomar Trading.

The power disruption also caused the early closure of StandPoint and Printrite offices which are housed in the adjacent Complex 2 building.

Fire Safety Awareness Week is being observed in the Territory from October 5-12 under the theme, “Fire Prevention: Our Intention 2008.”
