Four VI riders will depart over the next two days to compete in the 8th Annual Caribbean Cycling Championships which is being staged in St. Vincent beginning Sunday with a time trial and concluding the following day with a road race.

Lisa Adamson and Patlian Johnson will lead the charge for the women, while Gareth Thomas and Mark Smith will compete for top honours among the men.

Cycling Federation President David Thomas said that the team, which will begin departing today, will come up against the best in the region.

The VI has not always performed well at the Caribbean Championships only securing a silver medal performance from Adamson last year.

“The BVI has not been known to be a cycling powerhouse regionally. This is an event when the top cyclists will be there, but we are not known to perform particularly well at this event. We are hoping that Lisa can go out and defend her silver medal. For the others we are hoping that they can do their best,” Thomas stated.

Adamson, Johnson and Smith slipped in much needed practice last Sunday during Nature’s Little Secrets Cycling Club (NLSCC) last time trial for the 2008 cycling season.

Adamson, who was the first woman across the finish line, mapped the relatively short course which covered E&B supermarket in Palestina along the flat terrain towards Frenchman’s Cay and back to Palestina for one lap in 26 minutes, 19 seconds and finished third overall.

Johnson wrapped up the third spot in 35mins 55secs, while Smith finished behind Chris Ghiorse in 25mins 57secs.

Thomas stated that the event has always been highly competitive.

“None of our men have been able to break into the top ten in the seven years that we have been going to the Caribbean Championship. The men competition has always been tougher because the mere fact that they are more men involved in the race,” Thomas alluded.

He added that it is expected that the participants will gain experience and find respect for the sport.
