A local team led by the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development Petrona Smith recently visited Virginia, USA, where they met with senior representatives from Crowley Caribbean Services LLC, which has been contracted by Government to ship the components of the disassembled incinerator from Virginia to the Territory. Among other things, the officials discussed the shipping contract. “Shipping is expected to take one month from the signing of the contract, mainly due to the special permits and alternative routes that are expected considering the large components of the incinerator that will have to be transported by land and sea,” the acting Permanent Secretary said. Government’s existing Consumat CS-1600 modular incinerator, which is capable of processing 40 tons of waste per day, was commissioned in 1994. Owing to the notable increase in solid waste generated each day, it became necessary for Government to purchase a new incinerator. Following an expert recommendation, the former Executive Council approved the purchase of a Consutech/Consumat Modular Controlled Air Incinerator, which is two-and-a-half times larger than the present incinerator. The Ministry of Health and Social Development has finalised shipping arrangements for the new 100-ton incinerator which was purchased for use at Pockwood Pond to complement the existing 40-ton facility.
