(Photo * Gordon French) Fourth District Representative, Hon. Vincent Scatliffe outlined a number of actions Government will undertake to improve the aesthetics and quality of life of people living in and those accessing the district.

In recent years, certain areas of the district, especially Crablot in upper

Main Street
, which has been tagged the “Ghetto” and Scatliffe Alley, have become notorious for criminal activity, including narcotics and gun-related violence.

However, at a recent community meeting at the Band Stand, Hon. Scatliffe told residents that the proposed projects will include a community centre, a market square, a pedestrian mall and several news initiatives to ease sewerage buildups, traffic congestion and flooding in the district.

According to Hon. Scatliffe, the community center is critically important for the youths of the community.

“What we talk about academically and what is important for our youth - youth development, skill training and utilising our senior citizens in passing on the culture to our young people. This community center will facilitate that process,” Hon. Scatliffe stated.

Asked if the center will help in anyway to ease the impact of crime on the community, the Fourth District Representative said that the center will provide an avenue for youths in the community to channel their energies to more positive things flowing from the center.

”The Crablot area poses a threat to us. Yes they have some undesirable activities taking place there but we have plans in place to deal with that. We have immediate and long term plans. In terms of going into specifics I don’t want to go into that,” Hon. Scatliffe stated.

Addressing the issue of traffic congestion within the district, Hon. Scatliffe said that they are plans to tackle traffic along the commercial corridors with the introduction of a bus service.

He alluded to the fact that vehicles have outgrown the infrastructure and with little room for improving the facilities, Government is on target to implement new initiatives.

“We have more vehicles on our road now than what the road network we have can take and there is no expansion of the road network and as a result of that we had to take drastic measures to reduce the number of vehicles imported into this country and hence on the road,” Hon. Scatliffe stated.

He pointed to the implementation of a bus service in the near future, which is said will bring Government closer to solving the traffic buildups at strategic locations.

“If we implement an efficient bus service from point ‘A’ to ‘B’ up to 12.00 in the night you would find that there will be no need for persons to go to the bank and purchase a vehicle for their own transportation need.  They can utilise this bus service which will be reliable hence that would go a way to reduce the number of vehicles on our streets,” Hon. Scatliffe alluded.

He added that the plan has already begun to be implemented through a new category of licensing for various vehicles. According to Hon. Scatliffe, other plans to ease traffic congestion will include the building of parking garages on the outskirts of Road Town.

”These garages are going to be empty spaces which can be used for various activities when they are not being used for car parking.  We are going to create a reliable shopping service between each garage and the inner city so you find a person can park their vehicle on the out-skirt and actually shuttle in and out of the city and just enjoy the experience that the city has to offer them,” Hon. Scatliffe stated.
