The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Association in the Virgin Islands will be holding activities this weekend to mark the 29th year of Independence for St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

This year’s activities will be held under the theme 'Forging Linkages for a Stronger Caribbean' from October 24th to 26th.

Vincentians at home and abroad will mark their country's annual Independence on Monday October 27th, 2008. The country gained political Independence from Britain in 1979.

Activities begin Friday at HLSCC, from 6:45pm as the BVI-UWI open Campus in collaboration with H. Lavity Stoutt Community College and the BVI Vincentian Association presents a lecture and discussion on 'Forging Links for a Stronger Caribbean'.

Dr. Karl Dawson Vice President of HLSCC will deliver opening remarks at the event. Acting Chief Education Officer Dr. Marcia Potter will introduce the evening’s guest speaker, Vincentian Historian and head of the SVG-UWI centre for continuing studies Dr. Adrian Fraser.

Fridays' lecture will cover areas such as Education, Regionalism, Assimilation, Free Movement of People, Sustainability and Future Trade. According to the SVG/BVI Association, the audience will also hear remarks on current BVI Linkages in the Caribbean and arguments for and against such Linkages.

The Vincentian association said that it views the discussion as a timely one as they further assess the movement of people through the Caribbean from one country to another and the resulting impact for further strengthening the resolve of Caribbean civilization, to be a unified front in a globally competitive world.
