Traffic build up is an everyday occurrence in Road Town

To accomplish this, opined the Traffic Cop, the Public Ministry officials should relocate the bus stop to free up traffic and allowing it to become an express lane for vehicles going around the Roundabout and the dual carriageway. He also believes that there should not be any parking on Fishlock Road in the vicinity of the Ashley Ritter building.

Headley acknowledged with the heavy traffic flow – road rage, overtaking and parking have become a real problem.

However, with auxiliary officers about to come on board, more traffic officers will be on the roadways directing traffic. He also alluded to the fact that officers are currently placed at strategic locations in the capital around 4:30 pm and 6 pm to control the traffic build up.

Commenting on the perception that traffic officers are only seen as “cell phone and seatbelt” police – Headley pointed out that these offences are contributing factors to the 1,171 traffic accidents that have occurred so far for the year.    

Meanwhile, the Traffic Cop is optimistic that with the installation of the traffic lights the likelihood of traffic accidents will decrease. 

In early March of this year, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications unveiled its plan to ease the traffic congestion within the Road Town area by installing traffic lights at key intersections.

The Waterfront modernisation project, which will be done in two phases, will see that installation of traffic lights at the Road Town Roundabout and at the intersection that connects Waterfront Drive and Admin Drive.

Phase ll of the Waterfront modernisation programme will be the construction of a four-lane highway from the Road Town roundabout to the Sea View Hotel.

Communications and Works Minister, Julian Fraser in pinpointing the urgency of the project had said, “As a motorist, I am also sensitive to the daily traffic congestion along Waterfront Drive and after studying the problem and using a similar approach to what was implemented at Station Avenue, it was determined that adding traffic lights at these two junctions would help to alleviate the congestion.”

Government will embark on a public education campaign to ensure the public understands the steps being taken to address the traffic congestion issues in Road Town .

The installation of traffic lights is in keeping with Government’s commitment to implementing improved traffic management systems for Road Town .
