ImageRasheed Richards was the first to cross the finishing line in the last H. Lavity Stoutt Community College/Highland Spring race held on Saturday, October 25 at Paraquita Bay, as the event again attracted more than 100 athletes for the third consecutive time this year.

Richards, perhaps taking advantage of the absence of current overall leader, Steven Asson, who won the first two races, completed the two-mile in under 12 minutes, although no exact times are available for the open category.

Not far behind, were fellow junior runners, Alliston Blyden, Naje Smith and Richard Francis. Richards is the current record holder in the secondary school cross country category and is a former member of the defending champions Carlisle House of the Elmore Stoutt High School.

In the women’s category, Samantha John stirred things up as she earned victory in her first race of the series. Defending champion, Darwn Peters, was second, followed by Kay Reddy, who was first in the previous race when Peters was absent.

Shamouri Robinson and K’zea Weeks continued to dominate the boys and girls under-9 one-mile category with their third consecutive wins.

In the cross country arena, the Francis Lettsome Primary School and the Rotary Club of Tortola secured their third consecutive wins.

In the secondary school division, the consistency of the Cedar School athletes paid off with a solid second place finish, positioning them in a competitive three-way tie for first place; the others being Carlisle House and Flemming House of Elmore Stoutt High School.

Lecturer at HLSCC and Race Director, Mrs. Stephanie Russ Penn, was pleased with the race overall, but was disappointed that, for the second successive event, the exact times were not recorded for the open two-mile category due to a malfunctioning stop watch. She spared no words in apologising to the athletes and promised to correct the problem for the next event.

The final race of the Virgin Gorda leg will be held on Saturday, November 1 beginning at 7:00 a.m., with registration at 6:30 a.m. The event will be promptly followed by an awards ceremony at the College’s Virgin Gorda Centre, Enid Pickering Plaza to recognise the athletes who have performed outstandingly on the sister island throughout the series.
