Security will have to be reviewed at future horseracing meets to eliminate any mishaps such as the stabbing incident that occurred on Boxing Day at the Little ‘A’ Track, Sea Cow’s Bay said outgoing President of the Horse Owners’ Association, Perry Penn.

“That is something top on the agenda if we are re-elected this year. Actually, we will be calling a meeting this week with the horse owners to let them decide if they want us to take the reigns for another year,” noted Penn.

Before the final race of the day on December 26, a source told the StandPoint that while horse owner Brian Scatliffe also known as ‘Power’ was tending to his horse (Brass Flash) he was approached by a spectator (the alleged stabber).

“This was at the back of the stables and a confrontation ensued between the two men resulting in Brian being stabbed with a knife,” disclosed the source.

Scatliffe was rushed to the Peebles Hospital where he was treated for stab wounds to his neck and back. The wounds were not fatal, this newspaper understands, and Scatliffe is now home recuperating.

Information coming from the Police Information desk stated that Robinson, 42, of Ballast Bay was arrested for the offences of Wounding and Armed with an Offensive Weapon. He is currently in Police custody.

Commenting on the incident, the Horse Owners’ Association President said it was a sad incident and could not have happened at a time when the Association is trying to revamp the image of horseracing.

“We are desperately trying to bring the fans back out and we hope the incident does not deter fans from supporting the sport,” Penn lamented.

He reiterated the claim that tighter security will be enforced at future races and added, “The fact is only horse owners and handlers are allowed access around the stable area.”
