Fresh ways for the Territory to benefit from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) were among the topics discussed by Premier Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE, on Wednesday with a senior UNDP representative.

The Premier met with Stein R. Hansen during his February 5 and 6 familiarisation visit to the Territory. Hansen, who was recently appointed Deputy Resident Representative to the UNDP Barbados Sub-Regional Office, previously worked with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.

“The UNDP proposes to enhance its delivery of assistance to the British Virgin Islands and other Caribbean Small Island Developing States . My meeting with Mr. Hansen included consultations on new programming priorities and strategies,” said the Premier.

In addition to meeting with the Premier, the UNDP representative met with Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Dancia Penn, OBE , QC . He was scheduled to have talks with Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Honourable Omar W. Hodge, and Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Office Rosalie Adams.

Hansen is also expected to meet senior officials within Government ministries and non-government agencies who are closely associated with UNDP-funded programmes in the Territory.

UNDP is the United Nation’s global development network that operates in 166 countries in order to help countries find solutions to global and national development challenges.

Among other things, the UNDP assists the British Virgin Islands and other developing countries in attracting and using aid effectively.

Image The Dotted Line - Breaking the cycle

What’s the point of expressing bewilderment at the state of violent crime increase in these islands if we are not prepared to do something about it? Gun crimes seem to have gone out of control. Ninety percent of these types of criminal activity have gone as mysteries. No one knows who done it.
