The recent drowning, which claimed the life of Leonard Jno-Baptiste has brought shock, grief and disbelief to those who knew him.

He was a young man with a free spirit to the many persons who have been in contact with him day after day at the Paint Factory where he was employed.

At 30 years of age at the time of his death, this young man had his whole life ahead and was the father of two girls.

Baptiste died of drowning after he got entangled in a fish net during a fishing trip on Sunday.

His death came on the heels of that of Donna Baronville, 35, a mother of two who was gunned down cold bloodedly on February 5.

Her murder still remains unsolved as Police continue to investigate the case.

These two incidents, although different in circumstances, have taken the lives of two young people which probably could have been avoided.

It has shown us that in life we never know what tomorrow brings and it is therefore important for all of us to do what is right when we are alive and to recognise people when they are alive and thank them for what they have done.

As these incidents signal a tragic start for 2008, let us not take on a general gloomy outlook to everything else around us. The mother of the late Leonard Jno-Baptiste was quoted as saying “God never gives more than one can bear.”

The V.I. StandPoint staff join in expressing condolences to the family and friends of Baronville and Jno-Baptiste.

Meanwhile, this month is Black History Month as the Territory pays tribute to those who have contributed to making the Virgin Islands what it is today.

And as we move forward and look towards the coming months, the 2008 Budget seem to be shining in the distant.
