After an exciting six rounds, last year’s winners of the Primary Division Inter-school Spelling Bee, St. George’s School , topped the semifinals on Friday February 11,  with 33 points moving them on to compete in the finals on March 4.

The other schools in the finals are Robinson O’Neal Memorial with 25 points, Isabella Morris with 24 points, Alexandrina Maduro with 22 points and Willard Wheatley with 21 points.

Other competing schools were the Century House Montessori, Ivan Dawson, Joyce Samuel, Cedar, and Ebenezer Thomas Primary.

The finals will be held at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall and will be broadcast live on ZROD 103.7 FM. Awards will be given to schools placing first, second and third place and the winners will receive trophies, books and monetary prizes. The Ministry and Department of Education and the Rotary Club of Road Town are jointly sponsoring the Spelling Bee.  Additional sponsors include, but are not limited to, Cable & Wireless; Harneys; J.S. Archibald and Co.; MB’s Ice; BVI Springs; DeCastro Marking Products Ltd., MWM Financial Services and ZROD.

The competitions are a prelude to Education Week, which will be observed from March 9 to 15 under the theme “Building Collaborative Teams for Teaching and Learning”.

Coordinated by the Ministry and Department of Education and Culture, the spelling bee competitions promote the importance of spelling in all disciplines and helps students to increase their vocabulary, reading and communication skills.
