The top three students in classes one to five of all public primary schools in the Territory will be treated to a geography tour of the islands in the Territory today Friday, February 15 during mid-term break. A total of 256 students will be on the tour sponsored by the Ministry and Department of Education and Culture under the auspices of the Minister of Education Andrew Fahie. These students were the top performers during the Advent term of the school year 2007/2008 Honourable Fahie told the Department of Information and Public Relations that the aim of this initiative is to reward academic performance. We hope through this initiative to reward the academic excellence of our students, and to build and encourage all students to continually aim for the top, the Minister said. Minister Fahie said that the incentive will aid in boosting students moral and highlight the positive things that are happening with the students in education. There is always a tendency to highlight the negatives when it comes to our students. This is one way in which we, in the Ministry and Department of Education, and as a Government, can highlight and reward the top performers in our schools, he said. He added, During the tour, students will be given the opportunity to see and identify the different islands in our Territory on their own and write the names of the islands on a map which will be provided. This will be hands-on learning for the students and fun at the same time. The students will be traveling on two catamaran ferries accompanied by teachers, parents and two tour guides. The boats will leave the CSY Dock in Baughers Bay at 8:30 a.m. The Ministry of Education and Cultures mission is to ensure access to quality education and opportunities for the holistic development of a people that are adaptable and capable of functioning effectively in a global environment.
