Donna Baronville
Close to a month after the brutal slaying of Donna Baronville at her apartment in Free Bottom, police are in the sticks about a possible motive and a probable suspect for the murder.

Baronville was killed on February 4, when a gunman unleashed a barrage of shots – five bullets struck the 34-year-old mother of two, police sources say.

Detective Chief Inspector, Tom Murray told the StandPoint that police are still keeping an open mind as investigations continue, but pointed out that the response from the public has so far been disappointing.

“It’s disappointing the response from the public to this case…It’s a problem we face where people are reluctant to come forward with information because it’s a small community,” Murray stated.

The weapon, which is believed to be a pistol, has not been recovered, but police had removed several spent shells from the scene.

Baronville, who resided at Elliot Hodge Apartments, was killed a few days short of her 35th birthday.  At the time of her death, she was deeply involved in organising a marriage enrichment weekend at her home church, the New Testament Church of God in Baughers Bay.

Her plans were to coincide with Valentine’s Day, which would have seen several partners renewing their vows during the weekend following February 14. She had intentions of doing so as well.

“We continue to appeal for assistance in solving this crime and we welcome any information that would assist us,” Murray said.

He maintained that there were a number of gunshots and there is no doubt that someone would have seen something.

During a previous interview, Murray had stated that the force guarantees the protection of witnesses, noting that persons should contribute to making the island a safer place.

“They can contact me or inform their local police station or contact the confidential hotline 1800 -744-8477,” Inspector Murray stated. A police statement on the incident stated that Baronville was shot on the porch of her apartment at about 10:00 p.m, while her daughters and husband were indoors. Baronville was a Trinidadian living on Tortola for a few years and was employed as a marine insurance underwriter for Caribbean Insurers Marine Limited.

She started out at the company on June 15, 1999.

What’s the point of expressing bewilderment at the state of violent crime increase in these islands if we are not prepared to do something about it? Gun crimes seem to have gone out of control. Ninety percent of these types of criminal activity have gone as mysteries. No one knows who done it.
