Local hurdler, Bianca Dougan has kept the Virgin Islands flag flying on the collegiate circuit by posting a winning personal best time in her debut last Friday as a freshman at Central Arizona College (CAC).

Her performance also assured her participation in the National Juniour College Athletics Association (NJCAA) championships slated for May.

In the 400-metre hurdle, Dougan posted a time of 1:06:06, shaving just over 3 seconds off the NJCAA qualifying time of 1:09.08 and erased her previous best time of 1 minute 8 seconds.

Dougan also shared the track with fellow Virgin Islander and CAC freshman, Karene King, who won her 100-metre heat and was third overall with a time of 12.76 seconds. But, she was disqualified in the 200 metres for a lane violation.

King told the StandPoint earlier this week that she was pleased with her first outing, noting that she intends to “train hard and win easy”.

“I need to improve my start out of the blocks and my finishing. It was all right, but it was very cold too. I found I ran well for my first meet especially in that kind of weather. I am still working towards my goal which is to lower my 100-meter to 11.60 and 200-meter to 23.9,” King said.

Despite the cold conditions, Dougan who is new to hurdles, also enjoyed success in the 4x400 relay where she ran the third leg for the CAC “A” team, which posted a time of 3:58.95 topping the 4:05.14 NJCAA qualifying time.

Dougan said she was also satisfied with the relays since it was the first competition for the team.

“It was the first time we ran together as we run more we will get comfortable with each other and our spots,” Dougan stated.

She told the StandPoint that she was nervous at the beginning of the meet, because she was unsure of what to expect, but noted that she was targeting “64 to 65 seconds” in her first outing.

“Well now I know where I am right now and what I got to work on cause I’ve been training from since late august so after that first meet it showed and helped me identify what is left to do. Even though I did not get the target, I am still satisfied,” Dougan stated.

She added that she started warm-ups under warm conditions, which later gave way to rains, prompting her coach to issue a call for her to take a break.

“It became colder and colder until it started to drizzle, my coach told me to take it easy because it was cold...But I still went out though because I had lane 8,” Dougan stated.

She thanked her local coach, X’axvier Samuels, the Fast Lane Track Club, her family, the BVIOC, the BVIAAA and the entire community for helping and supporting her.

Dougan has been representing the Territory at Carifta since 2004 and has been selected to participate in this year’s championship, which will be held from March 21-24 in St. Kitts.

Dougan stands alongside University of Texas ’ Longhorns freshman, Chantel Malone as local athletes to make their collegiate debut with victories. Malone won her Triple Jump event last month. Malone broke the local indoor national record Triple Jump competition with a leap of 40 feet 4¾” at the Illinois Women’s Invitational.
