This observance started when a United Nations Resolution was ratified in 1991, because it is recognized that “diabetes is a chronic, debilitating and costly disease associated with severe complications…”. This observance came through the collaborative effort of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). All agree that this disease “poses severe risks for families, Member States and the entire world, and serious challenges to the achievement of internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals”.

Private Sector, NGOs raising the bar

Globally, cancer rates could further increase by 50 percent to 15 million new cases by 2020, according to the World Cancer Report, the most comprehensive global examination of the disease to date.

However, the report also provides clear evidence that healthy lifestyles and public health action by Governments and health practitioners could stem this trend, and prevent as many as one third of cancers worldwide.

Locally, Nature’s Little Secret Cycling Club and a private sector entity Eureka Medical Clinic have been keeping the topic alive over the past years with initiatives to help raise funds and bring awareness and efficient mammogram screenings particularly for breast cancer along with a recently re-established BVI Cancer Society, and a Task Force for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Diseases are now forging efforts astride to further raise awareness and help prevent and control all forms of cancers.
