The Economics of Obama’s Health Care Reform
The debate over health care reform in the United States (US) is concerned about four main issues. These are: (a) whether there is a fundamental right to health care, (b) who should have access to health care and under what circumstances, (c) on the quality of care achieved for the high sums spent, and (d) on the sustainability of expenditures that have been rising faster than the level of general inflation and the growth in the economy.
Overall, the proposals of the Obama Administration for Healthcare are admirable in light of the history facing the US health care system. However, from an economic perspective, the timing for this kind of overhaul may not be suitable because of the serious budget deficits in which the US currently faces. Instead the US government should undertake a phased reform process, which would allow for some of the objectives to be achieved in the short run and the majority to be achieved in the long run. The actual direction to be undertaken by the US government on this issue in the coming weeks will certainly be an interesting one.
