In two weeks, Her Majesty’s Customs K-9 Unit seized a collective amount of nine pounds of marijuana being transported through two local courier services at the Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport. On January 8, they seized four pounds of marijuana during a routine inspection of Cargo at the airport while on January 21, five pounds of marijuana was seized. The four pounds were discovered in a box that was concealed in styrofoam and glued to throw off the scent of the canine officers. Canine Officers Krugan and Havoc made both seizures. Deputy Comptroller for Enforcement Dean Fahie disclosed that both set of drugs which had come in on separate courier services were from California and had local addresses. However, up to press time, no arrests were made into the seizures and the police are continuing their investigations. Fahie stated that since the Department has increased their canine officers, the unit has been doing more inspections at the port of entries. Fahie noted that with more canine officers one will be stationed at the airport and will improve the chances of finding more narcotics. Information about the seizures come on the heels of the celebration of Customs Week which is currently underway, as the department aims to sensitize the trade community on its roles and responsibilities while hoping to encourage students to make Her Majesty’s Customs a career choice.
