Dear Editor,
We refer to a letter to the editor published in the 5 November online edition of your newspaper headlined, “Student Objects to HLSCC Library Policy,” and written by a “concerned student.” The Learning Resource Centre, under which the Library falls, after consultation with the Student Development Council, began requesting identification cards from College students after there was a wave of undesirable conduct and misuse of the facility by both students and members of the wider community. This policy was introduced purely for security reasons, as well as to ensure that the Library provides the appropriate service level to the various categories of users. Further, it has always been a front office rule to hold the ID cards for students who use the reserve collection, following which the card is returned. Requesting ID cards from all persons on entry to the Library is an extension of this policy. However, if a student or anyone else has a valid reason for not having his or her ID, service is not denied. Specifically, students are registered and can be logged in to use the facility. In all cases, ID cards are returned on exit. As far as the College Administration is concerned, shredding of IDs if left behind is a non-issue, as such a practice has never even been discussed or practised. We welcome the concerned student to speak with any of the Library staff for further clarification.
