HLSCC President, Dr. Karl Dawson, presents the proceeds of the Virgin Gorda Race for a Cause to President of the Valley Sound Lions Club, Grace Flax Walters.

Maxford Pipe completed a clean sweep with his third overall win when the Virgin Gorda leg of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College/Highland Spring Race Series concluded on Saturday November 7.

Following Pipe closely to the finish line were Emrol Amsterdam, Ernest Williams and Curwin Andrews.

This year’s newcomer, Augusta Rensburg, captured the women’s overall title, also with a clean sweep of the races. Rensburg said she will now continue her preparation for the upcoming BVI half marathon, adding that she is looking forward to more races in the future on Virgin Gorda soil.

Robinson O’Neal Memorial, for the first time, captured the title in the primary school division, defeating three-time consecutive defending champions Parker’s Panthers of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre.

Six-year-old D’Neigh Willaims, of Parker’s Panthers, captured the outstanding primary school female athlete award, while Mackembo Demming, lone participant representing Corner Stone School, was awarded the trophy for outstanding primary school male.

In the secondary school division, O’Neal House of Bregado Flax reclaimed the championship title, as Harrigan and Rhymer Houses tied for second place.

“Overall it was a great series,” said Race Director, Stephanie Russ Penn, as she congratulated all the participants during the closing ceremony.

HLSCC President, Karl Dawson, who was on hand for the final event, expressed appreciation to the Valley Sound Lions Club for what he described as the organisation’s tremendous contribution to and, support for, the race series over the years.

Dr. Dawson praised the staff of the College’s Virgin Gorda Centre and members of the community for their continued assistance. He also presented the proceeds raised from the Virgin Gorda “Race for a Cause” on 31 October to current President of the Valley Sound Lions Club, Grace Flax Waters.

The race series returns to Paraquita Bay on Saturday 14 November, which will be the Tortola leg of the Race for a Cause in support of the BVI Red Cross and Rotary International in their fight against polio worldwide.
