Here are some sobering statistics about the propensity for and the result of sport utility vehicles roll overs according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

1. Rollovers accounted for more than 10,000 fatalities in the USA in 1999. That's more than side and rear crashes combined.

2.  SUVs have the highest number of rollovers per 100 crashes, but because of the higher number of passenger cars on the road, almost half of all rollovers in '99 involved passenger cars.

3. More than 90 percent of rollovers occur after a vehicle runs off the road and strikes a curb, soft shoulder, guardrail, or other object that trips it.
