Road Warden Bill to be introduced

The VIP government will soon introduced a Road Warden Bill in the House of Assembly (HOA), which will give way for the appointment of a Road Warden for each electoral district under the Ministry of Communications and Works.

This was stated by the Governor, His Excellency William Boyd McCleary, during the speech he delivered from the throne in the HOA recently.

Taxi drivers eager for fare increase

Taxi drivers are eagerly awaiting the new tariff for the operation of taxis on the island. They say it has been approximately 20 years now since a new tariff was introduced. Speaking with The Standpoint, taxi driver, Irad Brathwaite, said that while he is comfortable with the regular $5 around Road Town, he would like to see the fare increased for West End, East End, Cane Garden Bay (CGB) and Brewer’s Bay.

Traffic dept. reports over 1,000 accidents

The Traffic Department of the Road Town Police Station has reported that approximately 1,000 road accidents have occurred for the year thus far, at the end of August. This is according to Head of the Traffic Department Inspector, Kenrick Headley. Around the same period last year, there were 1,024 road accidents.

The car and boat show turned out to be a successful event, but the organizers were hoping for a larger participation from boat owners. Vice Chairman of Capital Productions, Julien Johnson, told The StandPoint that car owners must be commended for their participation.

Changes in traffic regulations met with mixed views

The recently announced changes made to the Road Traffic Regulations 2009 by the Minister for Communication and Works, Honourable Julian Fraser, following concerns by taxi professionals, has been met with mixed views.

More than a week ago, Minister Fraser, Permanent Secretary, Julian Willock, and other officials met with taxi professionals to address the issues that were raised at previous meetings.

Traffic Department cautions drivers during rainy season

The Traffic Department of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force is cautioning all drivers to be careful on the road during the rainy season. Sergeant Smyrna Brewley of the Traffic Department said they have not gotten any reports as yet of any accidents in the accident prone areas during the rainy season. However, it is still early and they do anticipate accidents especially in areas such as the Joe’s Hill and Belle Vue Roads.
